The A6210 Thrust Position, Differential Expansion and Rod Position Monitor is designed for the AMS 6500 Mechanical health monitoring system with three different operating modes: thrust position, differential expansion and rod position monitoring.
In thrust position mode, the A6210 monitor accurately monitors the thrust position and provides reliable mechanical protection, trigger alarm and relay output by comparing the measured axial axis position with the set alarm threshold. The monitoring of thrust position is one of the most important measurements in turbomachinery. In order to minimize or avoid contact between the rotor and the housing, a sudden or small axial movement needs to be detected in 40 milliseconds or less. Redundant sensors and voting logic are recommended. In addition, it is recommended to combine thrust position monitoring with thrust bearing temperature measurement.
The monitoring of thrust position includes the installation of one to three displacement sensors parallel to the shaft along the shaft end or thrust ring. A displacement sensor is a non-contact sensor used to measure the position of a shaft.
For safety-critical applications, the A6250 monitor provides triple redundant thrust protection based on the SIL Stage 3 overdrive system platform.
The A6210 monitor can also be configured for differential expansion measurement mode. The differential expansion measurement provides a measure of the relative difference between the displacement sensor mounted on the housing and the sensor target on the shaft when the turbine is started, as both the housing and the rotor expand due to changes in thermal conditions. If the housing and shaft expand at roughly the same rate, the differential expansion will remain close to the ideal value of zero. Differential expansion measurement modes support series/complementary or cone/slope modes.
Finally, the A6210 monitor can also be configured in an average rod drop mode to monitor slide wear in reciprocating compressors. Over time, the slider in a horizontally reciprocating compressor will wear out due to the effect of gravity on the horizontally placed piston in the compressor.
