The simplest form of the coupler consists of two parallel single-mode fibers placed closely together. The basic operation of such structures involves partial or complete transmission of power between two waveguides. The power exchange is due to optical coupling between the vanishing tails of one waveguide mode to another waveguide mode, where light is emitted, the natural mode of the second waveguide. This optical interaction can also be seen as a jump between the symmetric and antisymmetric supermodes of the composite structure. Evenly spaced parallel interaction regions play a key role in the coupling process. The interaction region has a longitudinal invariant structure, and the optical coupling in this region can be understood by coupling mode analysis.

The coupler, also known as the adapter, is a device that transfers power between systems, and can divide one microwave power proportionally into several channels in the microwave system. The shaft of the driving device and the driven device can also be mechanically connected.
