Bus controller is the core of bus system, its task is to manage the use of bus in general, including the management of the equipment on the bus and the process management of the equipment using the bus. As you can see from the overview diagram, the bus controller is at the core of the bus system. The reason why it is called the bus controller in the logical concept is that there is not necessarily an independent controller in the bus controller implementation technology, and its functions may be distributed to each component of the bus or each device.

From the functional point of view, the bus controller completes the tasks specified by the bus protocol, and it has the following main functions:

1. Management of bus system resources

The resources of bus system mainly include storage space, device port space, channel, interrupt and so on. The bus controller needs to allocate resources, determine resource conflicts, and select, start, and reset devices. [1]

2, the bus system pure timing

Whether it is synchronous bus or asynchronous bus, the system must have timing control. The so-called system timing is to generate various bus commands and identification signals, coordinate the working process of the equipment, assist the bus arbitrator to work, control the time that the equipment occupies the bus, and generate various timing signals. 3, bus arbitration

When several devices in the bus make requests to use the bus at the same time, these requests need to be arbitrated to determine which device can be in the priority state, so as to obtain the right to use the bus. [1]

4. Bus connection

For there are many buses in the system, a bus controller is needed to complete the conversion between different bus protocols. If there are multiple buses in the system, the bus controller must complete the connection between these buses. [1]
